Mark Shiell to step down from Artistic Director position

Mark Shiell, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Zelman Symphony, has announced he will step down from the position at the end of 2017.

Mark first appeared with the Orchestra as Guest Conductor in 2004 and after several successful concerts, was appointed permanently in 2009. Since that time, he has conducted the orchestra for all but two of its concerts.

Under his leadership, the orchestra has risen significantly in standard and has presented programs that have grown in scope and ambition, resulting in the growth of audience numbers to unprecedented levels.

Mark was the inspiration behind the orchestra's sold out performances of Mahler Symphony No. 8 in September 2013, which has lead to other significant highlights including an appearance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 2014 by invitation from Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the two events scheduled for later in 2017: Shostakovich Symphony No.13 Babi Yar at Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall in September and a concert with pianist Hoang Pham at the Melbourne Recital Centre in December. These two concerts will be Mark's last before he steps down.

The Orchestra wishes Mark well with his change in musical direction, and looks forward to its final few concerts with him.
