Michael Woods

Michael Woods received his early musical education at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne and participated in seven Australian Youth Orchestra seasons, five as a principal trombonist, including extended tours of Asia and the United States. He played alto, tenor and bass trombones in most of the professional orchestras of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Symphony Australia as well as in the orchestras for the Australian Opera and Australian Ballet.

At the age of 22, he won the audition for a permanent principal position in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and for some years was also principal trombonist with both the Victoria State Opera Orchestra and the Australian Pops Orchestra as well as being involved in a wide range of theatre, television and studio work. Outside Australia, Michael has performed with professional symphony and theatre orchestras in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

As a conductor, Michael came to note with the release of his cycle of Robert Schumann’s four symphonies and has worked with the Australian Pops Orchestra, Rotary Orchestra of the Stars, Adelaide Symphony, Stonnington Symphony and the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra.

We welcome Michael back to Zelman Symphony after two very successful rehearsals seasons with us – now he gets to do the concert too!

The above details were supplied by the individual conductor and were current at the time of their last performance with the Zelman Symphony.
