Shostakovich Symphony No.13 - Babi Yar75th Anniversary Commemorative Concert17th September 2017 2.00pm - Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer HallSeptember 2017 will mark the end of the 75th Jewish year since the Babi Yar massacres, in which over 110,000 people were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. Zelman Symphony conducted by Mark Shiell will present this Babi Yar commemorative concert with bass-baritone soloist Adrian Tamburini, Guest Concertmaster Wilma Smith, Chorusmaster Nicholas Cowall, and some 300 performers on stage. The symphony will be preceded by a commemoration ceremony and a reading of the Babi Yar poem. The first half of the concert will feature a delightful flute concerto by legendary Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, which draws on her childhood memories of Soviet Russia, played by leading Australian flautist Sally Walker for whom it was composed in 2015. Becoming InvolvedIf you are interested in singing in the 170-voice male chorus or playing in the orchestra, please provide your details below. For those contemplating being part of the chorus, we should point out that the text is in Russian. You will be provided with roman-text parts and preparation will be principally by Nicholas Cowall, who has considerable Russian choral experience. We are also preparing a recording to assist with your preparation. For players, we cannot of course guarantee a place for everyone and there may be a need for auditions in some cases. We will reserve places for current Zelman Symphony players, however we encourage all interested players to register and become involved with the orchestra during all of 2017 - we will give preference to those who commit to play with us for multiple concerts.
