Ji Won Kim - violin

Ji Won Kim has established an extensive performing career in Australia as both a soloist and chamber musician. In recent years she has been regularly engaged as a concerto soloist with the major Australian orchestras including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Canberra Symphony and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Ji Won Kim's principal teachers have included Mark Mogilevski, Sook Yoon, Nelli Shkolnikova and Alice Waten. She is a graduate, with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Vienna and has two Master of Music degrees, one from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne and the other from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

She is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards. In Australia, she was the winner of the SBS Matthew Krel Prize, of the ABC’s Australian Concerto & Vocal Competition and of the ABC Young Performer of the Year Award. In Korea she participated in the Kumho Prodigy Program for talented violinists and won the Music Journal Competition. In Europe she has been the first prize winner of the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Austria and won second prize at the Bled International Violin Competition and the Lisbon International Violin Competition.

Recent highlights of her concerto engagements in Korea and Europe have included the Dvorak Violin Concerto with the Swietokrzyska Philharmonic, the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Bruckner University Orchestra in Linz and also with the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic and the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Seoul Prime Orchestra.

During 2012 she appeared as soloist in the Lark Ascending and Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and gave performances with the Canberra Symphony. She also toured nationally and internationally with the Melbourne Piano Trio including being invited to appear in the 2nd International Chamber Music Competition Hamburg. She also gave recital performances with the Trio's renowned Australian pianist, Hoang Pham including Korea-Australia Friendship Concert at City Recital Hall, Sydney, for the University of Melbourne's Graduate House and in the Melbourne Symphony’s 2013 Stravinsky Festival.

2013 has included appearances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as soloist in Mozart's Violin Concerto No.5 under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis and also in the Lalo, Symphonie Espagnole, and two periods of attachment to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden as third concert-master.

During 2014 she will take up a temporary position with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur.
