Karen van Spall - mezzo soprano

Karen Van Spall graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts School of Music with a Bachelor of Arts (Music) and Bachelor of Music Performance (Hons). Following this she engaged in a semester of study at the Brisbane Conservatorium Opera School and then continued her tuition in London which included singing as a guest of the Arya Opera Company.

She performs regularly as guest artist of Opera Australia, has performed as soloist for Victorian Opera and various orchestras including the Zelman Memorial, Frankston and Ballarat Symphony Orchestras. Roles she has sung for Oz Opera are Suzuki, Kate Pinkerton, Mercedes and understudying the role of Carmen. Other roles she has performed include; Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Secretary (The Consul), Slave (Salome), Third Orphan (Der Rosenkavalier) and Third Handmaiden Girl and Unborn Child (Die Frau Ohne Schatten).

Her theatrical experience encompasses Cabaret, Musicals and straight theatre. She recently created the role of "Therese Rein" for Triumvirate Productions new musical Rain. Sacred repertoire includes Alto solos in: Requiem and Missa Brevis in C by Mozart, Mass in D by Dvorak, Mass in G Minor by Vaughan Williams and Missa Brevis by Kodaly.

Her major orchestral song repertoire includes Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été and Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. In 2012 she presented a recital of Chopin's Polish Songs at the Melbourne Recital Centre for the Melbourne Art Song Collective and in 2013 she will be performing a recital of Wagner's songs for the Ring Festival.
