Karen van Spall - mezzo soprano![]() Karen Van Spall is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts School of Music. She performs regularly as guest artist of Opera Australia, has performed as guest soloist for Victorian Opera and various orchestras including Zelman, Frankston and Ballarat Symphonies. In 2007 she sang the role of Mercedes and understudied Carmen for Ozopera and later this year will perform the role of Suzuki in a new production of Madame Butterfly directed by John Bell for the same company. Other roles she has performed include Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Secretary (The Consul), Kate Pinkerton (Madame Butterfly) and Slave (Salome). Sacred repertoire includes Alto solos in the Mozart Requiem and Missa Brevis in C, Mass in D by Dvorak, Mass in G Minor by Vaughan Williams and Missa Brevis by Kodaly. Alongside traditional performance, Karen is interested in writing and producing "fringe style" opera cabaret and music drama. Karen performed two Italian arias with the orchestra in Un Concerto per la Famiglia, a concert in Daylesford's magnificent Town Hall for the 2005 Hepburn Springs Swiss-Italian Festa and will perform Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen on 12 April 2008 and 20 April 2008.
