Roman Ponamariov - French Horn

Roman Ponomariov was born in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, formerly one of the Soviet Socialist Republics. In 1991 he commenced studies at the 'Republican Musical School Sergey Rachmaninov' and, from 1995 to 2002, studied French horn in the class of Professor Vasilii Velichko. He finished secondary school in 2002 with an International Baccalaureate diploma.

In August 2002, Roman immigrated to Australia with his family and, after initially settling in Kalgoorlie, he moved to Perth in 2003 to begin studies at the University of Western Australia under the tutelage of Darryl Poulsen. Currently, Roman is a third year performance student at the University of Melbourne and studies with Geoff Collinson.

Roman has won a number of awards, including the ArtsWA Prize, the UWA Best First and Second Year Performance Student Prizes and several awards in Moldova. In September 2004 he performed as a soloist with The Western Australian Youth Orchestra playing the Strauss Horn Concerto No.1. He has also recorded a solo recital for the ABC Young Australia Program.

Roman is principal horn with the Western Australian Youth Orchestra, UWA symphony Orchestra, performs with the Australian Youth Orchestra and has a casual position with the WA Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Roman has also performed with the Adelaide symphony orchestra as a soloist as part of the ABC Young Performers Awards Competition.

He performed with the Zelman Symphony at the MLC Auditorium on Saturday 1 April 2006 and again at the Hepburn Springs Swiss-Italian Festival on the afternoon of Sunday 23 April 2006 in Daylesford.
